Bloc Québécois Refuses to Back Conservative Motion Against Carbon Tax

The Bloc Québécois will not support a non-confidence motion against the Liberal government solely based on the carbon tax, according to Bloc MP Martin Champoux. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has been urging opposition parties to collaborate in triggering a “carbon tax election” this fall, which would require support from both the NDP and the Bloc.

Champoux stated that a motion focused only on the federal carbon tax would align with Conservative interests, which is not the Bloc’s agenda. He noted that the carbon tax is not a priority for the Bloc since Quebec has implemented its own cap-and-trade system instead.

As Parliament resumes, uncertainty looms over the session’s duration. The NDP recently withdrew from its governing agreement with the Liberals, increasing the likelihood of an early election. Bloc leader Yves-François Blanchet indicated that his party will evaluate votes based on whether proposals benefit Quebec.

The Bloc’s legislative priorities include Bill C-319, which aims to equalize pension levels for seniors aged 65 to 74 with those aged 75 and over, as well as demands for greater provincial powers in immigration and compensation for funds owed to Quebec.
