Delhi Fire Department Responds to Building Tilt Reports Following Afghanistan Earthquake Tremors

Following the 6.6 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan on Tuesday evening, strong tremors felt across the region led to numerous reports of tilted buildings in Delhi. The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) responded to investigate these claims, according to DFS Director Atul Garg.

One such report came from the Shakarpur area in east Delhi, but after inspection, no tilt was found in the building. The caller, a neighbor, had made the call with good intentions, but the building’s occupants were unaware of it. Delhi Police, fire services, and DDMA visited the site, but no cracks or tilts were observed.

The DDMA recommended involving the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for a physical inspection by civil engineers. Additionally, the DFS received two more calls concerning tilted buildings in Jamia Nagar and Kalkaji Extension. Fire tenders were dispatched to both locations, with reports still pending.

The strong tremors that shook north India on Tuesday evening caused widespread panic among residents. The National Centre for Seismology in India recorded the quake at a 6.6 magnitude, with an epicenter 133km south by southeast of Fayzabad in northern Afghanistan.
